Staff

Daily activities are managed by the following SARC and Cal Poly Organic Farm staff. Additionally, SARC activities are assisted by a 28-member Advisory Board comprised of some of California's leading personalities in the sustainable and organic agriculture movements.

John Phillips

 

 



John Phillips

Dr. John Phillips, SARC Faculty Director & Cal Poly Organic Initiative Director. Dr. Phillips is a professor in the Horticulture and Crop Science Department (HCS). He teaches Precision Farming, Experimental Techniques and Analysis, Cropping Systems, Holistic Management, and is the Principal Advisor to the Cal Poly Organic Farm. Dr. Phillips has long standing interest in crop production, organic agriculture, and sustainability of agriculture and society. He is a member of the Technical Advisory Board for UC SAREP. Dr. Phillips recently served as the Interim Department Head for the HCS Department.

Neal MacDougall

Dr. Neal MacDougall, SARC Sustainable Wine & Viticulture Initaitive Director. As professor in the Agribusiness Department, Dr. MacDougall teaches Agricultural Economics, Land Economics, Senior Project and a graduate level course on technological change in agriculture. His areas of research interest include curriculum development and assessment, organic agriculture and aquaculture. He serves as the Chair of the Certification Standards Committee for California Certified Organic Farmers (CCOF) and is on the steering committee of Cal Poly's Sustainable Research Group for the Environment (SuRGE).

David Headrick

Dr. David Headrick, SARC Professional Education Program Director. Dr. Headrick is an Associate Professor in the Horticulture and Crop Science Department. He received his B.S. in Biology from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, his M.S. and Ph.D. in Entomology from the University of California, Riverside, where he continued on to conduct post-doctoral research from 1992-1997. Dr. Headrick’s research interests include biological control of whiteflies; ecology and biological control of citrus pests; ecology of invasive insects and weeds; biology, ecology, and behavior of California fruit flies.

Hunter Francis

Hunter Francis, SARC Program Associate. Hunter is co-founder of the SARC and has served SARC since 2000. He holds a Masters Degree in Agriculture from Cal Poly with a specialization in Soil Science. He is also a part-time lecturer and co-instructor of the Cal Poly Land Class: UNIV 330. Hunter worked for many years as a natural foods chef and has been active in the local community to promote regional agriculture through agri-tourism and place-based label programs such as the Central Coast Ag Adventures program.

Cindy Douglas

 

 



Cindy Douglas

Cindy Douglas, Cal Poly Organic Farm Manager. Cindy has worked in the organic industry throughout her entire career. She has undergraduate and graduate degrees from Cal Poly in Animal Science and Soil Science, respectively. Organic inspection, policy and regulatory positions followed at California Certified Organic Farmers, Oregon Tilth, and the Organic Materials Review Institute. Cindy is a former US Composting Council board member and winner of the Organic Trade Association’s “Grow the O” campaign. Her current passion is in overseeing Organic Farm activities to provide education in organic production and sustainable farming/landscaping techniques.

Jerry Mahoney

 

 



Jerry Mahoney

Jerry Mahoney, Cal Poly Organic Farm Production Supervisor. Jerry oversees all aspects of production at the Organic Farm. A graduate of the Ag Business Department at Chico State University, Jerry is a third generation farmer in the Santa Maria Valley. He is owner of TKP Farms, and has been a certified organic grower since 1996.

Anastasia Killham

 

 




Anastasia Killham

Anastasia Killham, Organic Farm Outreach Coordinator. Anastasia's main tasks include publicizing and marketing Organic Farm opportunities for the public, coordination of farm tours, and development of curricula for related workshops. She has been instrumental in helping the Farm to develop its Children's Garden. Anastasia received her B.S. in Journalism from Cal Poly and is a graduate of the Organic Enterprise class.
