Cal Poly’s College of Agriculture, Food & Environmental Sciences is home to the nation’s third largest undergraduate program in agriculture and natural resources (approximately 3,500 students). Practical, scientific training in fields ranging from production, processing, marketing, distribution, packaging, new product development, resource allocation and business management is offered in 17 different majors. Over 10,000 acres are allocated for agricultural instruction on the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo campus and at the University’s Swanton Pacific Ranch (in Santa Cruz County). These include rangeland for grazing, orchards, vineyards, vegetable and field crop production, agroforestry and turf management. Greenhouses, an arboretum and facilities for livestock, meat, dairy, fruit, and vegetable processing are also available for educational use. Classes in fields such as agritourism, cropping systems, grass-fed beef, fair trade, Holistic Management, integrated pest management and soil conservation offer students special opportunities to explore sustainable agriculture. |
